Trails

Trails are designed to provide walking, bicycling and other non-motorized recreational opportunities. By providing linkages to other areas and facilities, they also allow safe, non-vehicular options for travel throughout the community. Trails can be designed for single or multiple types of uses. The City designates trails into three classifications: paved trails, unpaved trails, and shoulder trails. Below are links to the City’s existing and future facilities maps.

Medina residents are also able to enjoy trails in Baker Park Reserve and utilize regional trails that run through Medina such as the Lake Independence Regional Trail.

E-Bike Etiquette on Medina Trails

We think electric bikes are an awesome invention… They are faster, heavier, and a lot more powerful than regular bikes, so understandably, there is added responsibility that comes with riding one.

Trails have established codes of conduct or etiquette to ensure a harmonious coexistence among different user groups.  Typical guidelines include yielding the trail to others, respecting right-of-way rules, and maintaining a reasonable speed. E-bikes, with their motorized assistance, are disrupting the balance and the shared understanding of proper trail usage in Medina, which has led to conflicts and frustration among user groups.

Preserving trail etiquette is crucial for maintaining a positive and safe trail experience for all users.  Please observe a few simple rules to ensure E-Bikers continue to be allowed to ride on Medina trails:

  1. Slow down to pass – when you’re passing pedestrians, strollers, dogs on leash, horses, slow down and make sure you give everyone lots of space.
  2. Let them know you’re coming – use your bell! Or better yet, especially when horses are present, simply say “on your left”. People appreciate the opportunity to be prepared.
  3. Be safe – keep your wits about you! Wear your helmet! Be prepared to react quickly to keep yourself and others safe.
  4. Be respectful – you’re an ambassador, YOU can make sure that E-Bikers have a good reputation by observing simple trail etiquette courtesies.
