2026 Update Summary:
The Hunter Lions Park Master Plan guides long-term improvements to the park and was updated in 2025 to reduce costs while continuing to meet neighborhood needs, with Phase 3 improvements scheduled to begin in spring 2026.
Project Background
In 2020, the City worked with WSB and the Park Commission to develop a master plan for Hunter Lions Park, focusing on replacing aging amenities and improving park functionality, safety, and recreation opportunities. Three concept layouts were reviewed by the Park Commission and refined into a preferred plan that was shared with the public for feedback through the City’s website and outreach efforts.
Based on public input, cost considerations, and available funding, the Park Commission discussed phasing improvements over several years. The City Council adopted the Hunter Lions Park Master Plan on March 2, 2021.
In June 2025, the City Council adopted a Park Commission–recommended amended renovation plan to significantly reduce project costs while still serving the neighborhood. Phase 3 of the project includes trail construction and a half-court basketball court, with construction anticipated to begin in spring 2026. Additional changes include retaining the existing playground and pavilion areas, preserving green space at the park entrance, reducing the number of trail connections, adding seating near the pickleball courts, and planting replacement trees along the park’s western boundary.
