Water Treatment Plant Expansion Update

January 2026

Starting next week, Public Works will begin piping work for the Water Plant Expansion project. This work requires temporary switches between treated water and an alternate untreated water source. A short switch-over will begin January 20, with additional, longer switch-overs in the coming months. Residents may occasionally notice brief water discoloration from iron (harmless); running cold water at the sink should clear it.

The City’s drinking water remains safe to drink throughout the entire project!

Hamel Water Treatment Plant Expansion and Upgrades Project:

The Water Treatment Plant (WTP) that delivers water to the Hamel Water System is in the process of being expanded and upgraded. The Water Treatment Plant removes unwanted Iron and manganese and was originally constructed with two filters along with space for the additional third filter.  This project involves the addition of that third filter which will help Medina reliably meet the City’s growing water demands.

Adding a 3rd Filter to Meet Medina’s Growing Water Demands:

The project has been scheduled to avoid the higher summer water demands (see the schedule below).  Starting in November drinking water for the Hamel Water System will need to bypass the water treatment plant filters. The drinking water will still meet all the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) requirements for safe drinking water.

Residents may occasionally observe discoloration of the water after the switch is made and could run their sink until the discoloration passes.
